EVENT ASSISTANT VOLUNTEER INFORMATION


Welcome and thank you for your interest in being a member of the WWF-Canada Event Assistant Volunteer Team!

Please review the critical information below, in addition to the 2009 Event Assistant Volunteer Positions, then proceed to fill out the Application Form.

Once you join us as an Event Assistant Volunteer, you'll be part of the team that is vital to the success of the Climb. So get ready to have a fun and exciting time, all while making a difference as we fight against climate change!

In addition to the tasks, skills and profile listed below, all Event Assistant Volunteers are expected to represent WWF-Canada in a positive, friendly and professional manner. Event Assistant Volunteers must always keep in mind that our purpose is to provide a high-quality and enjoyable experience for all Climbers - and to ensure that all aspects of the Climb run smoothly and efficiently. All Event Assistant Volunteers must be: trustworthy, reliable and focused on providing excellent customer service to our Climbers and to members of the Public. Any Event Assistant Volunteer can be dismissed at any time due to inappropriate behaviour, including: exhibiting disruptive behaviour and being under the influence of drugs/alcohol.

Orientation Session

All new Volunteers in the Tower must attend the CN Tower Orientation Session, held on a Thursday 6:30pm - 7:30pm at the CN Tower - Maple Leaf Cinema, in early April. Details TBA.

All new Volunteers in the Atrium must attend the mandatory Atrium Orientation Session, also held on a Thursday evening in early April, at the Atrium. Details TBA.

Event Assistant Volunteers General Skills and Personal Profile
MINIMUM 16 YEARS OF AGE (Under 16? Please email us at volunteers@wwfcanada.org with a request).

Regardless of position, all Volunteers must: have an excellent level of English comprehension and communication; have excellent communication skills; enjoy communicating with people; be warm, friendly, energetic, professional; work well with people and with crowds; be able to understand and carry out instructions; take initiative; keep calm, and remain friendly and pleasant under pressure; maintain a well-groomed appearance. All positions require commitment and reliability.

TEAM PUBLIC

ATRIUM LOCATION

Atrium Event Set Up 15 N/A Assist with the set up of the event from 12pm - 3pm. Must be organized, detail-oriented, responsible, able to take initiative, follows directions well, and able to lift and carry heavy items.
Atrium Coat Check 20 20 Safely and efficiently store climber's coats, jackets, bags, purses, etc. Remind climbers that for safety and security purposes, nothing can be taken up with them as they climb. This includes: water/purses/cameras/wallets etc. Volunteers must have very good English communication and comprehension skills, and must be able to deal with large line-ups and crowds. Must remain calm, pleasant and professional at all times - focusing on being efficient and providing excellent customer service for our Climbers. Must work well as a team.
Atrium Money/Supply Runners 8 10 Check each registration table on a regular basis to make sure they have enough money in their float. Replenish as required. You must have good English and Math skills, cooperative, flexible and friendly.
Atrium Take Down (clean up) 10* 15** Assist with cleaning up and packing away supplies after the event.

Atrium Line-up Monitors 10 15 Direct people in line to a registration table, answer Climbers' questions. Must have superior excellent English verbal comprehension and communication. Must be mature, friendly yet firm and enjoy dealing with huge crowds. You MUST be very outgoing and confident! If you are shy or quiet, please do not apply for this position. You must be able to voice and explains instructions very vocally. All of this and you must remain calm, pleasant and professional at all times. This is a key go-getter position.
Atrium Money Room 15 40* Count and double check money submitted. This room needs detail-oriented people with excellent Math skills. This must remain a quiet room...shhh!

Atrium Rovers 15 15 Assist where needed. Provide information and registration forms to climbers. Relieve coat check, change providers and waivers volunteers for breaks. Put up and take down signage at the beginning and end of the climb. May have to relieve outdoor rovers so please bring warm clothes. Must be flexible, mobile, strong and able to follow instructions well, take initiative, and must possess very good English comprehension and communication skills. Go-getters needed here!
Atrium Time Chips Runners 5 N/A Each runner is responsible for several registration tables. Run to Volunteer Room behind registration tables, and ask Time Chip Volunteers to help look up needed envelopes. Bring the envelopes back to the registration tables, and continue.
Atrium Time Chips 4 N/A Look up time chip envelopes and give to Runners.
Atrium T-Shirts and Timing 25 25 Acquire time data through information transmitted to computers at Timing and T-shirts station. Write time on Climber's T-shirts after they descend. Work quickly and efficiently so as to keep the long lines moving. Assist wherever needed during slower periods. Superior English, and ability to deal with stressful situations, large line-ups and crowds. Friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastic with great communication and interpersonal skills. Follows and understands instructions well and takes initiative.
Atrium Incentive Prizes N/A 6 Very good English, able to deal with line-ups and crowds. Friendly and outgoing. Follows and understands instructions well and takes initiative. Appropriate signage to be coordinated by captains and put up by team. Give out prizes based on appropriate stickers.

TOWER LOCATION

Tower Art Work (put up/take down) 8* 8** *11am - 3pm: Climb down the stairs and put up art work along the stairwell walls.
**1pm - 3pm: Climb down the stairs and take down the art work along the stairwell walls.
Outside on Path Directions/Rovers 20 20 Spread along the path from the SkyWalk to the CN Tower. Ensure climbers stay on the path. Provide information and direction to where they should enter. Wear warm clothing/layers as there is a wind-chill factor. If it's a rainy day, please dress appropriately as you'll be outside. Must be friendly, happy, have good English verbal comprehension and communication, and enjoy dealing with many people. Must remain calm, pleasant and professional at all times.
Outside on Path Hydration Station 10 15 Offer water to climbers and ensure they are well hydrated before they climb. Remind climbers they must finish water before they begin their climb - not allowed to bring it up the tower. May also provide water to climbers returning to the Atrium after their climb. Must be fast, nimble, energetic and enthusiastic. Must be vocal in directing all climbers towards the hydration station so they are well hydrated before they climb.
Indoor Base Rovers/Motivators 8 10 After climbers have descended via the elevator, direct them out of the Tower and back towards the Atrium to pick up their Climber T-shirt, any Incentive Prize, and their belongings from coat check. Need people stationed along the path from the elevator to the exit. May also need people out in the lobby directing Climbers that are both exiting and entering. Congratulate and thank the climbers! Ensure volunteers at Starting Line, Crossover and the Glass Floor receive water and food. Must be vocal, assertive, loud, energetic, and enthusiastic!
Glass Floor Water Station 8 10 Be proactive and hand out bottles to Climbers so they do not take more than one. Emphasize that there is only ONE bottle of water per person and that they can get more water outside when they descend the Tower. Make sure Climbers keep moving and do not dawdle at water station. MUST be assertive, confident, capable, enthusiastic, and willing to approach and engage Climbers.
