Taxpayers in Europe are supporting an over-sized fishing fleet, responsible for the depletion of fish stocks and the destruction of precious marine habitats within European waters and beyond.
On 22 May, European Union ministers will decide the direction of financial support for the fishing industry for the next seven years. Help us ensure that subsidies do not further increase this destruction.
The European fishing fleet is estimated to be 40 per cent larger than what European waters can sustainably support - meaning that far more fish are being taken out of the ocean than can be replaced by those remaining.
Despite this, a number of countries are trying to re-introduce subsidies to replace fishing boat engines and provide aid for young fishermen to purchase new vessels.
Public money must not contribute to further overexploitation. Instead it should be used to support an increase in fishing selectivity and the reduction of damaging environmental impacts.
Please write to the Fisheries Ministers of Belgium, Denmark and Finland, who have the opportunity to determine the outcome of the critical vote in, calling on them to demonstrate leadership and to resist the re-introduction of harmful subsidies.
Sincerely,
WWF International
